Keeping up with the Jones'

This week during our topic we've been busy finding
out all about keeping safe during the Blitz!

We started off by listening to an audio clip.
It started with an air raid siren. . . .

Next came the planes . . .

Suddenly followed by the bombs . . . .

And after what felt like an eternity, the reassuring sound of the 'All Clear' siren!

We listened to the clip again, we think we counted around 20 bombs dropping. Listening closely we could hear fires crackling and buildings falling.

We also heard the story of a lady who survived being in her house when a bomb landed on the roof!
Miss Willis' Granddad sent us a letter, in it he told us all about the night in 1940 when a bomb hit the roof of his house, it slid all the way down the roof and into the cellar of the house next door where it exploded. Luckily Miss willis' Granddad, Arthur, his Mum and his little brother were safe inside their Anderson shelter! Arthur's Dad was an ARP warden and it was his job to ensure others were safe during the air raid!

This helped us to realise how important it was to stay safe during the blitz! We looked at the different ways people tried to stay safe . . . .

Our favourite is the Anderson shelter, people didn't really like being in them during the air raids because it was cold, damp and dark - but it saved thousands and thousands of people's lives!

We were so interested in them that we even turned our book corner into a (nearly) life size Anderson Shelter,      we enjoy going in there to read WW2 leaflets and newspapers.

We made some miniature versions too, using the information we had researched we built scale models! Take a look at our video.

Listen carefully to the sound! It gives you an idea of what it might have felt like to spend the night in an Anderson Shelter during the war!

We're hoping to turn our class Anderson shelter into a Museum . . . We've collected lots of interesting artefacts from the war that we are really keen to share with others . . . so watch this space!

Once again it's been a VERY Happy Thursday :)!
