We're going on a bear hunt...

Well...ok, not really! . . . BUT a bear hunt is a type of quest!

In literacy today we had a look at online adventure quests, we especially liked the Viking quest as it allowed us to make our own choices which had an impact on the outcome of the story.

Miss Willis' Group scored 633points from the quest to Lindisfarne, I'm informed Mr Logue's group did considerably better!

So here it is....a link to the always changing Viking Quest.
Leave a comment to let us all know how you got on....remember to tell us the choices you made;

  • Money,
  • settlement,
  • boat,
  • crew,
  • route
  • and the damage to the Monastery
We'd love to know how you scored! Was your quest successful? Or did you anger the Chief?!

Good luck fearless warrior, may your quest be bountiful and safe!

Our trip to the Islamic Exhibition Centre.

A Brilliant morning was had by all!

Year 6 thouroughly enjoyed the time they spent learning about Islam this morning. We started our trip with a session about the 5 Pillars of Islam...
The first EVER 6W challenge -  the first member of 6W to post a comment with the 5 pillars of Islam in the correct order wins housepoints!

We moved onto a session looking at the prophets - Did you know...124,000 Prophets are said to have spread the word of Allah to every generation of every country!

We saw some models of important Mosques, we really liked the model of Mecca- the aerial photos we saw showed us just how big it really is!

Without a doubt, the best part of our trip was the session where we got to try on different items of clothes!

Take a look at some of our pictures!

Here come the girls - it just HAS to be matching!
Looking lovely ladies

Interfaith Week

It's only the first day and it has been as busy one...

We started the day taste testing African food, but we've got lots to tell you about that so we'll save it for another blog.

This afternoon we joined Martin and we learnt how to play African Drums.
We learnt the basics; how to make 3 different sounds with the drums!
We used call and response to communicate with one another and tried our hands at some rhythms.

Check out our video...not bad for a 30 minute session!

Tomorrow we're off to the Islamic Centre...Check back soon to find out more about our activities this week!

Ready for an air raid!

Well . . .

6W have once again done an amazing job!
Take a look at our gas masks . . .

Its a shame our Anderson Shelter (with its very own bomb) wasn't big enough!

Well done 6W - Very impressed!

Making your very own gas mask...

Good Afternoon 6W...

We've looked at different gas masks from WW2. Now its time to make our own!
First of all....

Take a template and cut it out.... Then glue it to the brown paper.

Once it has been glued to the paper it's time to cut it out again...including the eye holes and the circle at the bottom for the filter...

Now you've cut out the eye holes its time to add the protective see through plastic!
Cut out a rectangle of clear plastic, big enough to cover both eyes. Glue the plastic on to the WHITE template!

Once the plastic has been glued in place, its time to start making the filter!

Cut out the strip of brown paper...See the little black lines? They need to be cut (but only along one edge)

Now they've been snipped, fold them over like this picture:

Glue the ends of the strip of paper together to make a cylinder...(Make sure the white paper is facing in...Ask for a length of Sellotape to secure the join)

Once its stuck together, turn the mask over so you can see the white template. Now slide the brown tube through, The ends you folded over can be stuck down with sellotape to hold it in place.

And finally...Take a square of bubble wrap, place it over the end of the brown tube and stick it down with tape!

And you're pretty much done! Just need to add a piece of string so you can wear your mask!

Looking Good!

Can't wait to see your Gas Masks!

Bouncing off the walls....again!

We've been experimenting with light recently . . .

And we've decided to emulate our Scientific heroes at MythBusters HQ -
On an episode named "let there be light" Jamie and Adam try to copy a scene from the film "The Mummy".

In the scene the hero uses a set of mirrors and the sunlight to light the dark crypt of the mummy, deep underground.

We wanted to see if it was possible. . . We've been looking at reflection of light and testing angles of reflection so we put our knowledge to great use!
Turns out, with a big enough light source and mirrors with shiny, reflective surfaces we could  light up a room...

Here are some of our investigations - next step....can we reflect the light around our classroom?!?

This group take their time moving the mirrors, trying to find the right positions to reflect the beam of light.

This group, have managed a reflection...if you look closely you can see the torch and then a beam of light stretching from the top mirror to the bottom mirror.

What a fantastic reflection! This group managed to reflect a single beam of light across 3 mirrors . . . A fab job!

We wonder where we can take this reflective skill ! ! !

Never has so much been owed....

11.11.11 at 11am
We stood proudly in silence, remembering all of the fallen heroes from wars past and present.

It's an important celebration, one we feel strongly and passionately about. We keep all of the soldiers in our thoughts, prayers and hearts. . .

We remember, we are thankful, we will never forget.

Lest we forget

Today we've been making some comparisons.

We've had lots of fun looking at all of the wonderful artefacts from WW2, but today we thought about what those objects mean to us.

We looked at all of the things we have - freedom, the right to choose, friends from all over the world, a safe environment, equality. . .

It occurred to us, that we only have these things because of the hundreds and thousands of brave men and women who have given and are giving their lives to protect us and our country.

And for that we are truly grateful, we will always remember and we will always be thankful.
"never has so much, been owed to so few,by so many" Winston Churchill

So this November 11th, make sure you join 6W in a day of remembrance.
As a wise year 6 said . . .

"without our past, we have no future"

We WILL Remember

Corpus Christi War Museum

Is now . . . OPEN

We spent a wonderful afternoon, looking through different artefacts from the war. Naming, cataloguing and researching them.

These artefacts, which were donated by a private collector are now proudly on display in our classroom. Accompanying each item is an information sheet.
Our museum is open to all, the children in 6W are very knowledgeable about all of the items on display and are happy to share information and answer any questions you might have!

We hope to see you soon!

Keeping up with the Jones'

This week during our topic we've been busy finding
out all about keeping safe during the Blitz!

We started off by listening to an audio clip.
It started with an air raid siren. . . .

Next came the planes . . .

Suddenly followed by the bombs . . . .

And after what felt like an eternity, the reassuring sound of the 'All Clear' siren!

We listened to the clip again, we think we counted around 20 bombs dropping. Listening closely we could hear fires crackling and buildings falling.

We also heard the story of a lady who survived being in her house when a bomb landed on the roof!
Miss Willis' Granddad sent us a letter, in it he told us all about the night in 1940 when a bomb hit the roof of his house, it slid all the way down the roof and into the cellar of the house next door where it exploded. Luckily Miss willis' Granddad, Arthur, his Mum and his little brother were safe inside their Anderson shelter! Arthur's Dad was an ARP warden and it was his job to ensure others were safe during the air raid!

This helped us to realise how important it was to stay safe during the blitz! We looked at the different ways people tried to stay safe . . . .

Our favourite is the Anderson shelter, people didn't really like being in them during the air raids because it was cold, damp and dark - but it saved thousands and thousands of people's lives!

We were so interested in them that we even turned our book corner into a (nearly) life size Anderson Shelter,      we enjoy going in there to read WW2 leaflets and newspapers.

We made some miniature versions too, using the information we had researched we built scale models! Take a look at our video.

Listen carefully to the sound! It gives you an idea of what it might have felt like to spend the night in an Anderson Shelter during the war!

We're hoping to turn our class Anderson shelter into a Museum . . . We've collected lots of interesting artefacts from the war that we are really keen to share with others . . . so watch this space!

Once again it's been a VERY Happy Thursday :)!
